Elmbank Studios, Scottish Opera, Glasgow NHS Lothian Tour: Ferryfields House, The Hive, Liberton Hospital & Findlay House Devised with the company for an audience living with Dementia, The Magic Box joins a family on Christmas Eve, hurrying through last minute Christmas shopping and parties. As the world goes to sleep and awaits Christmas Day, the youngest of the children sneaks downstairs, hoping to guess some of the presents under the Christmas tree, or catch a glimpse of Father Christmas. Then, on a gust of midnight air, a mysterious magic box appears at her feet. It bursts open, and out pours the spirit of Christmas. Through adventures with toys, decorations, and of course the unloved Christmas sock, the children learn the joys of Christmas, and the love of their family. Embracing visual and sensory elements to prompt memories of the season, The Magic Box connects us through nostalgia and joy, evoking famous festive films and celebrating the everyday Christmas clichés that we’re all familiar with.
